About the site

Peter Mackarness (1919-2010) had a large collection of family photos, books,  trees, diaries, newspaper cuttings etc. left to him by his parents Cuthbert and Eileen (née Godfrey).  He was in contact with many relatives, and exchanged information with  genealogists and other researchers.  After retiring as a solicitor at the firm of Mackarness and Lunt in Petersfield, he continued to add to his knowledge and his collection.  At the same time his cousin Eleanor Booker, a retired civil servant, was also researching family history - much of what appears on this site is thanks to their collaboration. Another hugely significant contributor was Pat Harris née Mackerness, a keen genealogist who  traced the Mackarness/Mackerness/Mackaness name back to the 15th century.

After Peter's death in 2010, his daughter Patience wanted to share the collection more widely with relatives and other researchers. She therefore set up The Mackarness Place with the help of her (more technically-minded) son Ben.

A second body of photos and documents on the site relates to the forebears of Peter's wife Torla née Tidman (1920-2020). This is why, although the website is still called The Mackarness Place, it has a 'Tidman and Wedd families' subsection.

Many relatives have contributed additional information and photos since the site was set up. If you have materials you'd like to share, feel free to send  them via the 'Contact Us' section.
